The Sign of the Cross Booklet

Some years ago I had a discussion with friends on why Christians wear the cross as jewellery and why some who are not Christians, involved in other religions, also wear different forms of the cross. This led me to wonder why I used to make the sign of the cross over myself when I attended the Church of England and bowed towards the altar.

I questioned why some churches have crosses and are built in the shape of a cross and others are not.

I wondered what the sign of the cross means to Jewish people?  Why was the cross itself given such reverence as an icon of devotion?

I remembered extracts from horror films and plays where the cross was held up as a form of protection against Satan or as a form of exorcism to ward off evil spirits.

Where did these traditions come from, were they Biblical?

I decided to find out for myself and discovered there was much more to this than I had expected.
